Tenancy issues

Hello. I'm just wondering how we stand here. We bought a house in February. We had a tenancy on a house which we were bound to until late April. We let the lettings agents know we were moving out in late January so almost three months notice. We found out after the fact that new tenants moved in early April only because we got a refund from our council tax and energy supplier. We're still trying to get a refund for the extra couple of weeks rent we paid. Can they really just not refund us that money? Can we claim anything for not having access to the house when we thought we would? I really could have needed to stay there in that time, it's just a chance I didn't.

It is not allowed for a landlord to charge two overlapping sets of rent.
Providing you have all the proof e.g. the refunds as mentioned above, perhaps a copy of your checkout inventory which should be dated, and proof of when the new tenants moved in, then you could present to the landlord, requesting your due refund and go through small claims if worth it.
