Scammed . How do I fight back

Unsure33 · 27/06/2021 15:53

I feel so stupid of how I have been scammed , and I know I have a fight on my hands ,

I was really busy working when courier came to the door . He had a courier shirt with Logo on .
Handed parcel over , I signed .

Put in side . Few minutes door went again and the guy is stood there and said he had call and delivery cancelled as not for me sent in error . I said I needed him to ring supervisor to note I recinded my signature . He made a call . I handed back parcel . You guessed it the whole thing was a con and I had signed for a phone and apprentlly contract on line .

Now O2 are saying I am liable .

So I want to fight back

How would these people intercept a phone allegedly addressed to me .

How can they run up a huge bill with no financial details being given ?

Why did they not notice I suddenly had two accounts .

Opened with another email that was not mine ?

I now have to see if I have any ID a theft insurance anywhere . I feel sick and so stupid .

Legally if they pursue me I want to counter act them for such a stupid system and find out how the phone was sent to fraudsters .

In six weeks they've ran up £3500 of calls?? How?

GravityFalls · 27/06/2021 21:43

If they have the email address/phone number that the order was made under, they can track the status of the delivery basically to the minute so they’ll know precisely when it has been delivered. They don’t need to follow the van or anything.

International calls, probably. Or premium numbers.
GravityFalls · 27/06/2021 22:09

You can also pay for things through your phone bill - services/games/gambling apps etc will sometimes let you add a charge to your phone bill instead of using your card.

Unsure33 · 27/06/2021 23:03

@spaceghett0

The phone was about 1200 the rest was calls.

Thanks for email contact @Findahouse21.

My argument will be
I signed for a parcel not a contract
How can they let a person run up that much credit without DD agreement or pre payment
They know it’s a scam so why not text customers
Don’t let an account e opened for an existing customer with different email address
Have my details been stolen from o2 ?

If they take me to court I will counterclaim

@GravityFalls
yes that has slowly sunk in

I got a reference number for return . I know now that was part of the scam

But who ever carried out scam must know how they would be delivered

When you are expecting a parcel from a major courier and have a tracking number you can usually go to onto their website and ask for text/email updates of its progress. It would be simple for the scammers to do this and therefore to know when parcel had been delivered. Many couriers give an approximate time frame. They could then call at the victim's house soon after and spin their story of how "their colleague" mistakenly delivered a parcel earlier yadda yadda.

Simples.

nancy75 · 28/06/2021 00:53

Easy to track the parcel, I’ve got delivery apps that show me exactly where the driver is & how long he will be, some send a text as soon as the parcel is delivered (obviously for when I order my own parcel!)
If they do the scam a lot with the same company they know which courier they use & just get a t shirt printed up to look like the uniform.

ATieLikeRichardGere · 28/06/2021 08:18

Well thank you for letting us know about this scam. I had never heard of it and I think if it was me I may well have been taken in.

I think you are correct in your argument that you signed for a package but not a contract. Their due diligence has failed in allowing this contract to be opened in your name in the first place. And if they have done appropriate checks in that regard the phone would never have been delivered to you in the first place, and you would never have been confronted with a criminal at your doorstep. Therefore it seems that O2 should be liable and they also be apologising to you for the horrific ordeal.

ATieLikeRichardGere · 28/06/2021 08:19

Should say *if they had done

memberofthewedding · 28/06/2021 16:04

Thanks OP for sharing the knowledge about this scam. I get a lot of packages and will be extra vigilent in the future.

Its really easy to track a parcel.

They email you on the day. Give regular updates, a time of when they expect it to be delivered and tell you when its delivered.
They just wait til they get the delivered email and then they can knock on your door and ask for it back.

Unsure33 · 28/06/2021 19:02

Tried contacting o2 again. But apparently I have to wait for fraud to contact me again .Two things , one a friend said don’t be upset about letting phone go because if I had refused they may have got violent. I never thought about that . Plus I found a bit of paper where I wrote out the “ return “ number they gave me .Obviously false . They were as cool as a cucumber.

Actually they gave a false email address wonder if I can get hold of that and tell the provider it was used in a scam.

Thanks for that. Makes sense now. Never heard of this scan so I’m very grateful to have it highlighted.

Unsure33 · 28/06/2021 19:31

No one called so I found an email address and made an official complaint . I prefer to do things in writing .

Unsure33 · 10/08/2021 20:44

An update

its taken a long time and many complaints but O2 have relented and wiped off the debt and my credit is clear .

I’m so glad!!!!

And thanks so much for telling us about the scam, that’s horrendous and the only idiot here is O2.
