Summer camp refusing to refund a booking

BusyCee · 25/06/2021 12:00

I thought I was ahead of the game this summer and booked kids into camps/clubs etc. I made payment this week. Turns out we can now go away for one of the weeks. I've asked for a refund on the booking and they've said they don't refund, they'll charge me £10 per child flexi-fee and give me credit to use for up to a year. However a) I'd rather have my money thanks and b) we haven't used the club before so don't know if we'd want to re-book and c) what if they go bust?!

This is a larger business with several club locations. I know they've been hit by the last year, as have we all.

Surely I have the right to a refund? I can't find a definitive answer by Google and wonder if someone here can link me to guidance?

Thanks in advance.

what did it say in the contract?

NeedNewKnees · 25/06/2021 12:02

There’s no right to a refund just because your plans have changed. If Covid restrictions meant they had to cancel, yes, you’d be due a refund but not because you booked something and changed your mind.

Would you expect a refund on theatre tickets, for example?

MyDcAreMarvel · 25/06/2021 12:02

Why would you be entitled to a refund because you changed your mind?

Snookie00 · 25/06/2021 12:03

Why do you think you should be able to cancel and get a full refund just because you’ve changed your plans?

LIZS · 25/06/2021 12:06

You beed to check t and cs but unlikely booking is refundable and at least they are offering credit.

GU24Mum · 25/06/2021 12:25

What did the camp's booking conditions say?

Geamhradh · 25/06/2021 12:26

T&C's probably have the information you need.
I doubt you'd be refunded when it's your own decision not to participate though.

ApolloandDaphne · 25/06/2021 12:30

Why do you think you have a right to a refund? If everyone booked then cancelled and got a refund the company would make no money. It makes no business sense to allow cancellations on the basis of just changing your mind.

DancesWithTortoises · 25/06/2021 12:31

You have no right to a refund.

MrsCroc · 25/06/2021 13:20

What do the T&Cs say? Does it say non-refundable?

Longestfewdaysupcoming · 25/06/2021 13:22

What does the contract say?

BusyCee · 25/06/2021 13:28

Seems a fairly comprehensive response.

I guess as I'm cancelling two months out - rather than weeks - I'd assumed there would be lee-way. I run my own service business, and we honour cancellations because we know plans change for everyone. There are cancellation fees closer to the date of service, but this far out we always honour a refund. It must just be us!

Definitely check their T&C's. Ours has a scale of refunds depending how close to the date of booking you amend/cancel.

RainingZen · 28/06/2021 07:11

Some summer camps round my way sell insurance as an add-on so if you need to cancel, you can and still get refund. Look for one like this in future. They aren't obliged to refund you.

RainingZen · 28/06/2021 07:12

Thinking about it, perhaps you could sell the space to a friend at school for a cheap price? I imagine the summer camp might be flexible if you were extremely nice to them, and asked to change the details of the child registered.

0None0 · 28/06/2021 07:13

No, you are not entitled to a refund

SuperMonkeys · 29/06/2021 18:54

Tbh in terms of summer plans, it isn't that far off really
