Builder Issues/ Small Claims

A builder completed a small (under 10k) job for me last year. The job (bathroom) was left unfinished, was of poor quality, and is essentially beyond repair (according to other tradesmen who I have asked to fix it).

I sent the builder a letter asking for reimbursement - essentially enough to cover a complete refit and to replace things like tiles which we had purchased ourselves, no compensation for our trouble or anything like that.

He said he would pay half of what we asked for, and said would pay in instalments over six months. I am not happy with this and want to take things further.

He is not a member of any specific body to raise a dispute, so where do I go from here?

CAB website states that we must essentially exhaust all other avenues before going to small claims. I keep missing CAB helpline due to work, so desperate for some idea of what steps to take next.

Thanks!

You've made a complaint. If he is not a member of any trade body it is unlikely he is involved with any alternative dispute resolution scheme, so your next step is a letter before action setting out your claim, giving him a deadline to respond and saying you will take legal action without further notice if he fails to respond.
