Car lease damage charge - Unfair?

We recently ended the 3 year lease on our Hyundai Ioniq. When I was giving it a clean before collection I noticed 2 things, one, a scratch on the rear bumper and 2 a small area where paint was bubbling on the surface of the boot.

Now, I hold my hands up and will pay the £90 they want for the scratch, but surely they cant justify charging us another £100 for the paint bubbling? This is a manufacturing defect and the car remains in warranty until August.

Car was leased through Hyundai themselves, we have disputed the paint bubble and are still waiting to hear back but I'm interested as to whether this can be a legitimate charge?

Stand your ground, paint bubbling is not ‘a persons’ fault but as you say the manufacturer

It's annoying that I only noticed it the night before collection or I could have booked it into the local dealers myself under warranty, but it was too late to do much by then.

I've told DH they can take me to court because I'm not bloody paying it 😂

It’s typical isn’t it! But happens, don’t back down without a fight 😂

Absolutely. I shall not be moved!

Just make sure you have cancelled the standing order
They like standing orders as opposed to direct debits as with a SO they can take out different amounts

BingBunnyIsAnnoying · 28/04/2021 18:06

Most manufacturers offer some sort of warranty on paint/corrosion etc. VW for example is around ten years on the body. A friend of mine had some rust sorted out on the roof guttering under warranty and it was a lot older than three years

Stand your ground

I’ve already cancelled the DD so no chance they are just taking the money.
Called them earlier to settle the balance minus the disputed figure and they quoted £300 more than their actual invoice so they can’t even organise that. Now need to wait and see their revised invoice and see what we actually owe them.

Piss up and brewery spring to mind

Reply today saying basically tough, it was our responsibility to take it for repair. Pay up.
They have said we can refer it to the ombudsman so that’s exactly what we are doing.

One thing to remember is that the car will most likely be auctioned so unless they have absolute proof - clear time dated pictures and videos and it’s by independent checker they won’t have a leg to stand on
Ask them for photos of bubbling
Most of the time the photos are black and white and you can’t even work out what car it is

It's still rumbling.

We ended the lease early and paid off the balance so car remains in warranty until September.

We were given a collection date and nobody turned up. It took a further three weeks for them to collect and we couldn't use the car in that time period as we'd declared a final mileage.

We took good photos and a walk around video showing both the paint bubble and a 13mm scuff to the boot. Both of these marks fall within the BVRLA size guidelines and Hyundai leasing have actually confirmed the sizes back to us!

The have offered a £40 gesture for DH'S time for the failed collection but still want £200 for the "damage". DH has pointed out his daily rate is a lot more than £40.

We have now referred everything to the CEO of Hyundai and the BVRLA themselves. We were initially happy to pay the boot scratch but as it falls within guidelines and Hyundai have been so spectacularly unhelpful we're challenging the lot of it.
