Do they have to respond? Can they ignore the letter of claim? What it the best advice for someone receiving a letter of claim.

Our solicitor is sending one out soon and I'm not sure what are the rules around these letters.

Your solicitor should be able to advise you I imagine, but it could be anywhere between 14 days and a few months, depending on how complex the claim is.

The LoC usually states a deadline.

What type of claim is it?

For some types of action there is a protocol which sets out expected pre action (i.e. pre issue of court proceedings) conduct which includes usual time scales.

In a personal injury claim for example it's 21 days to acknowledge receipt of the letter and then 3 months to investigate and respond on liability.

It's generally 14 days to acknowledge the letter and 28 days to respond in full.

If its a pre-actuon protocol letter then the dates for both will clearly be set out

Depends on the pre action protocol applicable to the type of claim:

www.justice.gov.uk/courts/procedure-rules/civil/protocol

If it has a specific protocol then it will prescribe a period in which to acknowledge and then fully respond. Otherwise you should go off the general protocol (2nd on the list on the link above).
