Car Insurance

My policy auto-renewed in January at a very difficult personal time (I've name-changed as I've posted about it on here). Someone drove into me tonight and I've checked the policy documents which were sent out and realised that they have my Father down as the owner of the car (he was for a previous one) and, more importantly, that some speeding points I got for the first time in the Autumn aren't on it. Am I totally screwed? Can I inform them now and still be covered?

Bump.

You shouldn't have any problems in this case as your claim is against the other driver's insurance. Even if your insurer decides to cancel your insurance, you can still claim from the other driver.

As far as your own insurance goes, if your application would have been approved despite the incorrect information you should still be insured, although your insurer may want an increased premium.

@prh47bridge are you sure? Googling has made me rather worried.

Yes, I am sure. The other driver hit you. They are liable for any damage they've caused to your car regardless of whether you are insured.

Tangogolf55 · 14/03/2021 10:37

Are you a named driver?

HidingAgain · 14/03/2021 12:12

I'm the only driver on the policy.

@prh47bridge Is absolutely correct, try not to worry OP. The worst that can happen is your insurance gets cancelled and you have to pay slightly more for your next policy.

TheBugHouse · 14/03/2021 12:24

My dd got hit. Brand new policy. No no claim discount so I really worried. But the other driver admitted liability. Abs it’s all gone through his. Our ins company were notified but she won’t lose ncd angling through his! So if yours is the same they won’t be asking any questions or dealing with it at all.

TheBugHouse · 14/03/2021 12:26

Angling = as claiming through his 😂

HidingAgain · 14/03/2021 12:36

I've been a high risk driver recently due to previous claims. One of the reasons I'm worried.

That won't affect your claim against the driver who hit you. It may result in your insurer cancelling your insurance and refunding your premium, in which case you will have to find insurance elsewhere. But, even if you had been completely uninsured, the other driver's insurance would still have to pay for the damage to your car.

HidingAgain · 14/03/2021 15:25

I appreciate the reassurance. Would I not be prosecuted for driving without insurance if they cancelled it and refunded my premiums?

The police have to catch you driving without insurance for that to happen. You could, in theory, be prosecuted for insurance fraud but that is highly unlikely. Such prosecutions are extremely rare. They would have to prove that you deliberately made a false statement to get insurance.

HidingAgain · 15/03/2021 11:14

Grrr. Their phones are very busy, their systems are down and a webchat advised me to email in.

TheBugHouse · 15/03/2021 23:09

I’m sure you will be fine. Sort the claim under his insurance and then tell yours about the points . Hope all ok

HidingAgain · 27/03/2021 11:18

Just to say ... it took AGES (days) for anyone to get back to me but the details were amended and my premiums didn't go up. When I emailed in, as I had to as the systems were down, I did mention the incident but, even though they have no categorised it as my fault as it was on a roundabout, it didn't seem to change anything. Thanks for all the advice.
