Asking solicitor for update

anxiousavo · 09/02/2021 17:23

I'm awaiting a letter from my solicitor - have paid for c. 80% of the total estimated fee.

I instructed him a little over two weeks ago now and I've not received a draft yet. He has all of the information requested from me to write said letter.

Is a wait this long normal? Is it due to covid?
AIBU to ask for a status update/when I can expect this letter at the end of the week?
Last thing I want is for the party we're writing to to send over more comms to communicate the matter further.

Depends what the letter is for?

anxiousavo · 10/02/2021 20:50

It's about a dispute - ligitation

Then two weeks is too soon to chase

anxiousavo · 11/02/2021 03:12

Ok thanks, what's more reasonable timeframe?

I'm a litigator. It's fine to gently chase.

FinallyHere · 26/02/2021 10:51

Absolutely, I would want to know when I should expect to hear from them next, to set my expectations and so know when I should chase.

In your shoes I would certainly get in touch right away to ask when you can expect to hear.

kirinm · 26/02/2021 18:23

I think two weeks is okay. It would be too soon for me to have probably done the work giving my current workload but it would remind me to prioritise it (speaking as a litigation solicitor).

Spillanelle · 26/02/2021 18:26

You’re the client, I see no reason why you shouldn’t ask for an estimated timeframe. Surely they should have provided that up front.

murbblurb · 26/02/2021 20:05

You are paying. Phone the lazy bugger. Solicitors get treated as holy on MN!

anxiousavo · 26/02/2021 20:36

Hi all, he's since got back to me a week after I posted + afaik the necessary letter(s) have been sent out.

Having seen what was written, there was no justification for the delay and I could've written them myself! Really not rocket science.

If ever in this situation again (hopefully not), I'll seek to get clarity re a timeframe from the outset.

Check the letters actually went out. Tell him that your invoice reduces by 10% each time you have to chase him. And then blast him on any review site.
