Hi,

I really need help for my friend who is going through a rough patch and wants to file for divorce.

I'm assuming she'll need a list of things to bring documents and proof etc.. What would the solicitor ask for??

Many thanks in advance 🙏

I am supporting a friend thru divorce.
I don't think the first appointment is about documents.
More like it's about solicitor getting the general picture, & solicitor trying to explain the different pathways thru the process. Plus solicitor explaining their fees and duties & limits what they can do.

It's valuable if your friend has a clear picture how they want to split costs, split assets, and tries hard not to make the solicitor into an emotional support. It's fantastic if your friend can try to split all the money as soon as possible, and has a date when the couple formally split (that's when the money could be divided from, provisionally).

Every email my friend's solicitor sends, costs £60. Ka-ching!

Your friend wants to make the most of her time with the solicitor so setting out what assets there are if the marriage is the first step. Try and get her to make a list of all known assets and liabilities, so house approximate value (if known), amount outstanding on mortgage, details of any bank accounts and balances, details of any loans or credit cards, also what arrangements have been agreed between the parties. The more that can be agreed by the parties the better it is for everyone and keeps costs down. Also, she should take her passport and a recent (less than 3 months old) bank statement and utility bill as proof of address and her marriage certificate. If their are children of the marriage then details of ages and arrangements if there have been any agreed. Sometimes this is impossible depending upon the person you are trying to divorce!
