Sending a backdated invoice - is this legal?

I've recently received an invoice backdated to last Autumn, however it was only sent to me last week.

Prior to this, the amount "owed" was considerably less than this new figure.

Is it legal to do this?
If this case goes to court does this fact weaken the other party's case - especially if I'm contesting both the new figure and the old one?

I'd say it depends entirely what the invoice is for (ie. service/goods etc), what service/goods have been provided and what arrangement re price and invoicing you came to before the goods/services were provided. Them not invoicing for months won't help their case (unless this was the contractual agreement). If you agreed a specific price for whatever they has been provided, and it has been provided fully, then you'll have to pay even if the invoice is late. If not, you'll need to look at what you DID agree to pay

Thanks for clarifying - it's clearly a murky situation!

The service provided is disputed and I think the fluctuating figures (and backdated invoice) is a way of trying to cover their backs because of this.

The highly inflated invoice came months after I'd notified the provider of issues with their work... no attempt was made on their part to clarify what the issues were with their work.

Small claims can be a kangaroo court so I would be prepared for anything!
