CCICM overpayment?

Hello!

Not quite sure if this is a scam or not. Over the past week or so, I have received a text from CCICM every other day requesting me to contact them regarding a case number. I have assumed it's spam and have kept deleting it. I have however googled the company and it looks like they're a debt collector company and looks legal. Other than my student loan, I have no debts and barely use my credit card.

Today I received a text message informing me that there was a formal letter attached so I have had a look and it is addressed to me at an old address. According to this letter, I have been overpaid £3700 by a previous employer (I lived at the address when I worked for this employer) who I worked for until about 2 or 3 years ago. I no longer have the bank account I had when I was employed by this company and have no way of checking if this is legit, other than by making contact with this company.
Has anyone else had this happen to them?

You can ask the bank to provide you with old statements?

Getting old bank statements would be useless if you don't know when and how you were overpaid. Could be your final salary wasn't correct or you'd been paid an incorrect hourly wage for 2 years. Who knows.

Speak to your old employer and ask for a breakdown. Its quite a long way off becoming statute barred so if you have actually been overpaid you'll need to pay it back, better to be upfront and proactive on sorting this. They'll probably be more inclined to offer a decent installment schedule.

Also I've just noticed this is legal and not AIBU which is what I thought, apologies. My above comment is based on absolutely zero legal training, but its what I was "taught" on an industry HR/payroll course. There are some fantastic lawyers on Mumsnet, I'm sure one of them will be along at some point to offer better advice.

Isn't what I thought *

The previous poster is correct. If you have been overpaid you will have to pay it back. I would start by contacting your old employer asking them to confirm that they think you were overpaid and asking for a breakdown. That will either give you what you need to dispute their figures or, if they are correct, to negotiate a staged payment.
