Cost of making a will

Hi, I know it's a bit how long is a piece of string but can anyone (England) give me a ballpark figure for a will like this please?

I own my house (mortgaged, my name only)

I have around £100K equity when I remarry (nearly 2 years ago)

I want to ringfence the £100K, £50K to my daughter and £25k each to my grandsons at aged 25

Any remaining equity to be split between my husband and my estate, my husband having the right to remain in the house for his lifetime

I know it's not straightforward but my husband is happy with the arrangements, I just want to make sure my daughter and grandsons get what I want them to...

Any advice gratefully received

We paid £320 for mirror wills, ours were reasonably simple we just listed guardians for our DS and what to happen if he was no longer living and who gets our cat so I d imagine £200 for you alone as a ball park figure.

Thanks @1990shopefulftm, no minor DC between us, so I'm hoping it won't be too complicated and costly.

I paid about £450 odd to co-op to leave my home to my children from a previous marriage, but with a lifetime interest for DH, so they don't inherit it until he passes away.

my parents are getting mirror wills and were quoted £150 for both yesterday. So you should be able to get one for £100. They need a trust set up in their wills and that didn't increase the price.

Are you in a union? Some provide a free / low cost will writing service as a member benefit.

NeedToKnow101 · 22/12/2020 16:33

I think you just need to do it as soon as possible. As you're married, (if you are in England or Wales), your husband will get your whole estate and your DC nothing. He would then not be legally obliged to leave anything to your DC.
I had a solicitor offer to do mine for about £250. All online (apart from printing and witness signing) so can be done under lockdown.
Or you can use Farewell.com, which is cheap and cheerful (about £50) but legally binding too.

@Mumblechum0 of this parish did a great job for us. Years ago now so I don't remember the actual cost just that it was very competitive.

I had a very simple one for £65

You can write them yourselves (free) if pretty simple, buy a simple kit to lodge online or from about £200 with a normal high street solicitor. If using a solicitor it's worth drafting it before meeting them so no discussion takes place, thus increasing the bill!

Mine is written by me and perfectly legal

Thanks everyone. We're in agreement about the division of equity etc but I know it needs to be in writing to ensure that's what happens. We want to get it all laid out legally so that my daughter/ grandchildren get the equity I already had and then any equity over that is split equally with DSSs

I haven't paid for a will so can't help there but wanted to say that you should consider stating that the £50k should be split equally between all biological children of your daughter. This covers you in the events that she has another child(ren) after you've written the will. Which I imagine is what you would want to happen?

I hope you are right. Solicitors who specialise in probate will tell you that a lot of their revenue comes from sorting out problems caused by poorly written do-it-yourself wills.
