Faulty flat packed needs to be returned after assembly

Hello.

I purchased some garden furniture back in April. It came flat packed and took hours to put together. A part became faulty after a few weeks . The retailer sent out a new part but it was the wrong one . I emailed again . Never heard back so started a chargeback. The retailer then got in touch with me to offer either the new part or a refund. I opted for a refund ( this has been on going since May) .
The retailer then said that's fine but you need to dismantle the whole product and pack it back into boxes for collection .
I have offered to split it into four pieces but they will not accept it and will not budge.
Can they do this ?
Law says the return should not be at an inconvenience to me ?

No, the law does not say that. The law says they must bear the costs of returning the goods, which is rather different.

It is not unusual for the retailer to demand that the product is returned in its original boxes. Having said that, the last time I returned goods the men the retailer sent to pick up the faulty goods (a bed) were surprised that I'd actually disassembled it and put it back in its packing. They said that, in spite of the retailer telling people they had to do this, most people didn't.

Thanks for responding.
It was citizen advice from how said it shouldn't be at an inconvenience to me.
I really don't know what to do . It will take hours I haven't got to dismantle when it such poor quality anyway . I feel like they are just making it as difficult as possible.

I take it to mean the inconvenience of having to return it yourself.
So, if they are picking it up, returning it is not an inconvenience to you. It doesn’t mean you shouldn’t spend time putting it in a box.I imagine a courier won’t actually pick it up unless it’s smaller than fully built and in boxes tbh.
