Selling as tenants in common

Hello
I split from my exP some time ago and are now looking to sell the house we bought as tenants in common with a 50/50 division of equity if we ever split. However he is now claiming that I should pay back half of a deposit paid for a previous property plus half of mortgage over payments made by one of his family members. He is absolutely immovable on this and I am wondering what is the likelihood of me having to give half.
There is nothing in writing or signed saying that I need to pay back half of these if we ever split.
Thanks

If you are not married and their was no declaration of trust to protect the earlier property deposit then you don't have to take anything less than 50% of the equity. What he wants is immaterial, however, if he refuses to sell without your agreement to those terms you may have to get a court order to force the sale.

Oh he wants to see and is quite happy to take this to court if I don't agree to his terms. However he wants a quick sale and going via the courts will surely, at this time, add many months to this. I am prepared to move on with this immediately. But he is refusing to accept anything less than what he believes is his. Due to previous "issues" I am not in a position to discuss with him.
