Do I need a new will when I buy a new house?

We're selling our old house and buying a new one, are our wills still valid once we've moved? The reason I ask is that I think our address is listed on our existing wills. We're not married, and our wills leave everything to the surviving partner.

It depends. Does your will say "my share in the property 3 green road goes to Fred"?

Hi @HasaDigaEebowai. No, its not the specific, it just says we leave all our assets to the other partner.

Leave your will as it is but notify whoever holds it of your change of address.

Thanks so much @Collaborate

As Collaborate, since your wills have the old address in the text you'll need a note of variance (I think it's called) to override it. Give your solicitors who hold the will a call, it'll take five minutes (and doubtless a small invoice!).

In English law you vary a will be codicil and you do not vary it for an address change. So follow Collaborate's suggestion above.

It can also be a good idea as my father always did (and I do) to send a photocopy of your will to relatives so no one has a shock when you die and make sure they know where the original is kept in case you die.
