What does your will say re: children?

I'm planning my will with DH (I know we should already have one!) and was wondering what people have put regarding who looks after children in the event you both die? Have you specified a person?

We're just in the process of doing our one too. We have stated our preferred guardians - have included 2 choices - but have checked with them both that it is a responsibility they would wish to take on if the worst happened.

I think the solicitor did ask if there was a specific person and said that it is a good idea to name who we would prefer to be the guardian/trustee.

Please discuss it thoroughly with your chosen guardian prior to seeing a solicitor.. My once friend came back from her appointment and informed me she had put me down as her dc's guardian.. I already had 6 dc at home!!
Shock
We aren't friends now and I hope she has amended it!!

@Feralkidsatthecampsite yes we've already had a conversation with the probable guardian but will have a further one before we put them down. How odd of your friend!

@Shayisgreat did the solicitor say anything about providing money to the guardian? I was considering splitting everything between DC (in trust until 18 I guess) except for a small amount to go to the guardian themselves. The guardian would need to, for example, buy a bigger car, and i wouldn't expect them to pay for that themselves but I'm not sure what others do

@motherf88 No, solicitor didn't ask about that at all. I imagine that if you leave anything to the particular guardian it is for them to use as they wish. But it's probably best to discuss it with the solicitor.

Our estate will be held in trust by the guardian for the child so the guardian will have access to everything we leave the children until they turn 18. That way any expenses that arise as a result of having the care of the children will come from what we leave. Open to abuse sure but we trust the guardian.

Sorry - estate held in trust by the trustees/executors. Guardian is a different person but will have access to the estate as needed for the children.

We put MIL as DS sees lots of her. Our backup is my DSis. DSis has DC, whereas my BIL doesn't.
