Finding Proof of Divorce with scant information?

My daughter had a child with a man nearly a decade ago but he was abusive and they split up after three years. He told my daughter that he had been married before but got divorced when she became a Jehovah’s Witness and he thought she had moved back home to Portugal.

Her ex died a couple of years ago and she has been trying to obtain his pension entitlement to put in a savings account for their child. The pension scheme administrators have told her that their child would be eligible for payments until the age of 23 but first she must obtain proof of his divorce and whether it was a decree nisi or decree absolute, in case the ex-wife is entitled to make a claim herself.

My daughter hasn’t a clue of the name of his ex-wife or the Court where a divorce was filed and who filed it. It was possibly in west London/Middlesex but she doesn’t know for sure as he moved around a lot.

All she has is his name and date of birth. He was estranged for years from all of his family too and my daughter never met any of them and doesn’t know anyone who knew his ex-wife.

What can she do?

She can ask the Central Family Court to search for the decree absolute. They will search a 10 year period for £65. To do this she needs to complete form D440 which can be downloaded from www.gov.uk/copy-decree-absolute-final-order.
