Change of executor

Can you change an executor without cost? FIL has named solicitor as executor (very uncomplicated estate) but would like his sons to take on the role instead - mainly to avoid costs. How can this be done and if via solicitor, how much would it cost? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like FiL is still alive and capable so why doesn't he just make a new will naming his son as the executor, and have it signed and witnessed? Is there something more to this?

Thanks, nothing more to it. He's been given a terminal diagnosis and is just ensuring his affairs are in order with an eye on cost. He's a frugal soul!

Yes the simplest way would be to simply make a new Will. @mumblechum0 who hangs out on these boards has been highly recommended by several people.

Yes to Mumblechum, she’s good. And inexpensive.

My MIL did this when her husband died. She simply asked the Solicitor to renounce executorship.

It will probably be cheaper to do a new will or codicil now changing executor. Yes, the solicitor should renounce if asked but will charge for this as they will need to do a deed of renunciation. If they are dishy they may not even renounce without a fight.
