Can I be added to a car insurance policy without my consent?

My ex-partner & I are currently separating but living under the same roof.

His car insurance policy is up for renewal & he added me on as an additional driver as it's cheaper for him.

I have never driven the car & it doesn't sit comfortably with me.

Is there anything I need to be aware of?

Being a named or additional driver simply means that you could drive the car if you ever needed to. There are no negative implications for you and it doesn’t affect your own insurance policy (in some cases it can lower your own premium if you answer yes to “do you have access to any other vehicle” because it’s then assumed you would be doing less mileage in your own vehicle.

If you really don’t want to be a named driver then tell him so or contact the insurance provider, but there’s no harm in doing it.

always cheaper to have a second driver on the policy, and as noted doesn't do you any harm. Mention it at your own renewal when they ask 'do you have use of another car?'

as long as he is the main driver named, it's fine.

I added both my partner and father to my car insurance and no checks I had consent (I did but that's irrelevant). No one wrote to them or anything. Unlikely to affect you in any way

From Money supermarket.

"Do I need to know that someone has added my name to their policy?

Yes. You cannot add, or be added as a driver, on a policy without your permission. So, make sure you are always asked first. This also works as another defence against ‘fronting’."

It could be advantageous - say your car breaks down and you really need transport.....

You need to contact the insurance company, tell them that your details have been added to the policy without your consent. It is something to worry about, because he could have an accident and claim you were the driver! It will also be looked at with your own insurance if you have any. I had my insurance company contact me once because I had provided different information on a previous years policy. I had moved jobs 🤦‍♀️.

It will probably void his insurance. Depending on your relationship, you may or may not choose to tell him that.
