Car got stolen and I have 2 insurance policies!

Shit shit shit.
I took out a fleet insurance for our business vehicles 2 weeks ago. One of our cars got stolen on the weekend so started a claim on the fleet insurance.
I’ve just realised I forgot to cancel the single car policy I had on it prior to taking out the fleet.
Am I fucked? This could be 20k down the drain.
Should I cancel the old policy now and say nothing? I’m literally shaking I’m so anxious.
TIA

No don’t just cancel and say nothing, that will look really suspicious. Notify your newest insurer and explain you overlooked cancelling the previous policy. There’s usually a clause about what happens if there is more than one policy covering the event/incident. It may well be that as two policies were operative, the claim will be shared by both.

Have you paid for both policies? If it’s within 14 days you should be able to cancel the single policy and get a return premium with our cancellation / time on risk charges. The fact you have mistakenly got two policies won’t mean the claim isn’t going to be paid.

If it’s outside 14 days tell your fleet insurer and they will advise you what to do.

I’m just outside the 14 days. The fleet insurance is the one I took out 2 weeks ago. The single policy is about 5 months old.
I’ve started the claim with the fleet insurance. I emailed the single cover policy to cancel a couple of days after I took out the fleet and just found the email sitting in my outbox, unsent! I hadn’t realised and thought i hadn’t got a reply due to COVID delays.
I’ll phone the broker I took the fleet cover out with in the morning and see what they advise. This is the last bloody thing I need.
I can’t work with out my car and if I don’t get a successful claim We can’t afford to replace with anything at the moment Sad

You won't have your claim refused just because you have two policies. The worst that will happen is that it will delay payment as the two insurers will have to agree how much each will pay.

Agree you'll get paid out once, but not twice (and not nothing) between the two of them. It's an administrative oversight, not an insurance fraud.

The issue would be if you claimed on them both.

It’s not illegal to have 2 policies, however it can cause issues.
There may be some dispute over which company pays out and they may try and get the other company to pay out or each company could end up paying a portion of the claim each which could potentially class as 2 separate claims.
I’d contact the non fleet policy and tell them you forgot to cancel, they may want to see proof that you had alternative insurance in place but they should be able to backdate.
I work for an insurance company and we backdate policy cancellations because people forget to cancel at renewal etc.
Speak to the insurance company and I’m sure they can sort it x

In practice your new insurers will know. Good practice is that with each claim a check is made against the data base for dual insurance on the reg number. In normal circs each insurer will check with each other and you to ascertain the position. In circumstances such as these, one insurer will settle and recoup half from the other insurer.
Please don't worry.
