Sued for bad review?

gutentag1 · 01/06/2020 21:35

I recently left a bad review for a TV repair company after they provided me with extremely poor service, they have a google rating of 2 stars which shows the kind of reviews they receive in general. I now have the director (who ignored all of my complaint emails) threatening to sue me for damages and losses unless I take my review down.

I am seriously hesitant to give in to this bullying as I feel that he may have scared many other people into taking their reviews down, but can anyone please advise on whether he will actually have any chance of getting any money out of me for this?

Don't know about damages and losses but I know a bit about libel. If what you said is absolutely true and not malicious then you can stand by it.

If every tradesman after like him, nobody would ever be allowed to write anything negative at all.

Maybe make him an offer to come back and do a proper job, in which case you could genuinely give him a positive review?

Thanks mamasnet, I have reread the review and it is absolutely just an account of my experience.

The issue was that they said they couldn't fix it but kept my money, so I don't think offering for them to come back would be any use. Also this all happened a year ago, so the TV is long gone now!

I think he's just going through the reviews threatening everyone to be honest.

Ignore him. If you have written an honest review he has no realistic chance of success.

Redglitter · 02/06/2020 00:16

Ignore them. Reviews should be honest. If he doesn't like it then he needs to.improve his service. I bet its all just empty threats anyway

EmperorCovidula · 02/06/2020 00:18

He’s not going to be able to sue you for this. Why don’t you sue him for your money?

PegasusReturns · 02/06/2020 00:19

Either ignore him or alternatively you could ask him which part of the review he believes to be untrue.

He’s just trying to intimidate you.

Rhodri · 02/06/2020 00:25

If what you wrote is true then he can’t sue you. And to sue for “damages and losses” he’d have to prove what damages and losses he’d suffered as a result of your review, which would be impossible. Even if he loses customers, how can he prove it was specifically because of your review?

gutentag1 · 02/06/2020 11:08

Rhodri That's what I said! He has received such appalling reviews that any losses could not be tied to my review specifically.

Maybe he actually needs reviewing - -
He is a bully would suffice..

MrsFogi · 02/06/2020 11:19

No chance that would get anywhere if you have simply recounted your experience. I would be inclined to add to your review to update that they have threatened to sue (again factual).

Get screenshots (if you haven't already) of all the other bad reviews just in case.

From my experience people like this put much more effort in to trying to suppress bad reviews than they ever do their day job.

Beyond that, just ignore them like they ignored you, up to the point where they might be viewed as harassing you.

gutentag1 · 02/06/2020 13:09

ProfessorSlocombe Great idea thank you, I have done that now.

Yes I thought that, maybe spend more time placating current unhappy customers and less time threatening previous ones!
