Can my neighbour insist that we replace our (perfectly good) fence?

Next-door neighbour has recently bought a piece of farmland that adjoins part of our garden. On our deeds it shows that this boundary is our responsibility and it is currently fenced with low level wire fencing which is secure, but gives us a lovely view over the countryside.

Neighbour has informed us that she wants to replace it with 6 foot fencing for privacy and expects us to pay. Leaving aside the fact that she's told us she's not planning to apply for planning permission for change of use from farmland (in greenbelt conservation area) to garden, we are pretty upset that we're going to lose our view. Having to pay for the fence that would add insult injury! Can she make us?!

I'm currently inclined to take a pragmatic view and offer to contribute to a fence that maintains some of our view, but it would be good to know that there is no legal basis for her to insist on fencing of her choice.

Unfortunately council's can't act unless something has actually happened. So they couldn't take any enforcement action against the neighbours now.
I agree with pp to take dated photos of how it looks now so you have evidence to submit to the planning department if they try and change the use.

I wouldn't change the fence

And I would immediately contact the council if she tries to destroy your view by erecting things on it that defy planning

Our council got very involved when ndn wanted to knock down our listed house back wall...
If there are restrictions in place as per op stated... She may have a case.

I think you would be sensible to do your homework in this. As farmland in a conservation there may be rules restricting this as it tends to suggest change if use without permission....council planning departments are very familiar dealing with this as many people by land at the back of their houses, usually at a premium to the value for ordinary farmland and then try to gradually incorporate to their garden. If you are in a conservation area the rules are usually stricter.

I'm not sure that 6 foot fences would be allowable for farmland but it is a complicated area depending on where you live
