Online Will writing services

DH and I need to make wills, clearly we should have done this ages ago but we are where we are. Obviously we cannot visit a solicitor. I know we can still make our wills with a high street solicitor via email but I was also looking at several online will writing services which appear to be be quite a bit cheaper. If we use a reputable one (was looking at Coop, amongst others) is there any real disadvantage to doing this rather than using a firm of solicitors?

Can't comment on the quality of online service in general but we were thinking exactly the same. Chose Coop based on what was included and the price. Price was based on an initial online quick survey. We had a wait if about four weeks and then had the phone appointment with the gentleman. Spent nearly an hour on the phone to someone with whom I really struggled to build any rapport and then the final price was treble the initial quote. We've decided to use a local solicitor in the end as the price was about the same and the service has seemed better so far. Keen to know how others get on!

We used coop for mirror wills. It was all very straightforward. We didn't have anything complex in our wills though. I would recommend it if you plan on doing something simple and don't see it changing soon.

Look up @mumblechum on this site. She did our mirror wills all over the phone and was fantastic.

There is a Mumsnetter on here I, who writes wills. We did ours with her over the telephone and were very happy with the serice.

I can message you the website, if you like?

Zhx3 · 09/05/2020 22:24

Yes, it was mumblechum!

You can still use a solicitor; Solicitors who write wills are deemed key workers.

My firm is still writing wills etc

TwigTheWonderKid · 09/05/2020 22:31

That's interesting @Lochroy. Was there anything out of the ordinary about your situation?

@Lochroy I have found @mumblechum's website and contacted her through that.

We did ours through our bank account, which was all completed by email. No concerns, all very simple even when we changed things a couple of times. I wouldn't bother using a solicitor unless the will was complicated.

I was wondering how you get it witnessed at the moment.

Lochroy · 10/05/2020 07:33

@TwigTheWonderKid We were advised to include a property trust which would protect the value of each half of our property for our joint children in the event one of us should die and the other remarry. It's good advice (I think) but was presented in a complicated manner, and I didn't feel that it was explained well, nor some questions answered, so when we were then told it came with a big price hike, we felt quite uncomfortable as to whether it was the right thing to do.
