Covid employment query

My OH is being expected to, along with some colleagues, continue working f/t and accept an 80% pay cut whilst many of his colleagues are furloughed on 80% pay - not working. Jobs are not secure in either scenario. Seems like a crappy deal? I’m wondering whether this is legal, and if so, what rights might apply. Thanks in advance.

80% cut or 80%pay?

Lonecatwithkitten · 08/04/2020 13:58

It will depend on his contract, but if the contract allows for lay off with agreement of staff it is possible to reduce pay to save the company. My DP has accepted a 30% cut.

CaroleBaskin · 08/04/2020 14:29

My understanding is that as this is a change to the terms and conditions of your contract, you will have to sign something.

I am in the same position. Following with interest as nothing confirmed as of yet.

I know of a number of companies where a 20% pay cut has been requested - together with cancelled bonuses and annual reviews.

If it's keeping jobs safe for when this is over, it makes sense, although I appreciate it very hard for many people.

Can't believe how much less we're spending now though.

Sorry I meant 20% pay cut

Thanks for all the comments. I understand the pressure - the furloughing etc. It’s just the inequity of taking the same pay cut whilst still working f/t and being even busier as having to absorb all the work the furloughed staff would usually do. I’ve advised he speak to ACAS for advice.

I would imagine that if he's not been furloughed he has a greater chance of being kept on at the end of all this, if there are likely to be redundancies. It sucks. But it's commonplace at the moment and unfortunately people are having to do what's needed to keep companies afloat. How long does he need to accept the pay cut for?

inhibernation · 08/04/2020 21:47

They don’t have any greater chance of being kept on apparently, and no time scale has been applied. It could be indefinitely.

Whilst they legally don't have a greater chance at being kept on, they people chosen to stay will have been chosen because they are deemed the most competent or knowledgeable. I would look at it that way. I'm trying to.
