Nope. Sooner the better. Make sure it is for everything. Health and wellbeing.. finance ect. I work in a hospital and blows my mind how many people have a LPA for finances.. but not health?! You trust em or ya dont!

It only comes in to play when you dont have capacity anymore so its not like your kids could force you in to a home if you were sat here clear as day saying no.

Make sure you have a proper discussion with your childre about your wishes, and if they are still young then perhaps nominate a trusted family member or friend who would suport them should they ever meed to make big decisions on your behalf.

Do you mean a guardianship?

Lasting Power of Attorney is where you give others the right to make decisions about your care, treatment and finances if you lose the capacity to do so. The LPoAs have to be over the age of 18 when they agree to it.

A guardianship is something that you would do as part of your will to indicate who you would want to take over parental responsibility in the event of everyone who currently has PR dying.

I write LPAs for all age groups, not just elderly clients. Interestingly lots of my younger LPA clients are hospital doctors, they obviously see the problems which arise when they aren't in place.

We were talking about this the other day and have decided to do it when our youngest child is 18 years old. So it'll be another 3 years and i'll be 54 (DH will be 58).

We did ours a couple of years ago (early 40's). Its never too early. We did our own online applications as they are straight forward, although you will need to print forms off and get various signatures.
We also had our Wills done (by an MNetter).
