Coronavirus - employer taking temperature

Just that, employer now wants to start taking staff temperature before starting work. Regardless of the industry, do they have a right, is it legal?. For the record I am not opposed, but should I have to sign some sort of agreement/consent from beforehand?

Extremely grateful that your employer is taking the situation seriously. I have no idea if it is “legal”, no doubt others will. Why on earth would you object?

Ignore that gibberish, thought I had deleted it 😂

What's the industry? Do you have a contract about health related fitness for work? Entirely possible in, say, air traffic control.

Who is going to be taking these temperatures? By what method? Are the devices accurate?

Are the devices being sterilised if they will be touching peoples skin? By whom?

How many people will they want to be testing daily? Will they be record keeping? Will these records be maintained by a medical professional, HR or a random manager? How will the records be secured?

So many issues.

Duchess, as I said in my post, I am not opposed. I am asking if it is legal.
Cornish, you have raised some excellent points to be raised.

I think it’s sensible.

I’ve started taking ours at home to track any changes.
Mine seems always to be low (36.2) but in the “normal” range. So a temperature for me I’m guessing would be lower than the reported 37.8?? Or not? Can anyone advise?

Duchessofblandings · 14/03/2020 20:41

Does it matters if it’s legal, really, in the current circumstances?

Is it the right thing to do?

I would find it a bit infantilising, surely they can trust grown adults to manager their own health. But I guess it's no harm provided that they don't record the results or use them in a discriminatory way. You could refuse if you wanted to until they proved to you that they have the right to ask for it. Personally I would probably have an issue with being wrongly assumed to have a temperature because my normal temperature is 37.4 so it wouldn't take much to push me up to a level that would worry them. If they did it while I was having a hot flush they'd be really, really scared. Hot flushes feel like I have an internal furnace.
