Someone taking a delivery that wasn't for them?

Flutterby63 · 22/02/2020 10:15

I've recently moved home. I have an Ocado Reserved slot which automatically sets up an order every week. I thought I'd deleted my old address but it has set it up to go to my old address.

Apparently my buyers accepted the delivery.

I completely accept that it was my error re the delivery but is there anything I can do about the buyer accepting delivery? I spoke to Ocado and they said they didn't act like it wasn't for them.

Even if they accepted it in error, surely they'd know very quickly that it wasn't for them? Is there anything I can do?

It's £100 worth of goods!

Can’t you contact your buyers and go round and get your delivery? It’s your error, so in your hands to fix it really. I’d just go round to the house and ask them for it, and say it was delivered to that address by mistake. They might think their partner had ordered it.

RainbowDash101 · 22/02/2020 10:19

And I’d go quickly before they throw it away!

Apolloanddaphne · 22/02/2020 10:22

Surely no-one would throw away £100 worth of food? Whether they will admit to having it and handing it over is another matter though.

BoldRoo · 22/02/2020 10:22

I think (if I could afford to) I’d just accept my own error and let it go, rather than stressing myself out chasing around after some groceries. Bet they won’t answer the door if you go round there anyway.

Flutterby63 · 22/02/2020 10:25

I don't have their number.

I could send a courier around and it's still far cheaper than ordering a new set of stuff (I don't have a car so cheaper than a two taxi).

Apparently they were painting and decorating so they are definitely in.

Ask them for it back and if not forthcoming tell them you are ringing the police and reporting them for theft by finding.

Ring police in front of them

Flutterby63 · 22/02/2020 10:38

@Greenkit That's what I'd like to do to be honest. It is technically theft!

But it's too far for me to travel so maybe I just have to let it go. I might send them a letter to say that if a delivery is clearly not for them (i.e. if someone I know send something there via a courier who might know I've moved) that they should decline the delivery!

You don't know that they have deliberately taken it tho... they might think someone has sent them a delivery or might have ordered from Ocado themselves...

Either way it is your mistake op... when did you realise that the address was wrong?

slipperywhensparticus · 22/02/2020 11:38

I had an ebay seller who sent me a free item as paypal hadnt changed my address (I had changed it they randomly changed it back) they were unhappy that the delivery was accepted as it clearly wasnt for them

Flutterby63 · 22/02/2020 11:46

@Mammyloveswine I accept it's my error but the likelihood of them having ordered from Ocado during the same one hour slot and receiving numerous bags with shopping inside that wasn't what they ordered, I think the odds are very unlikely that it was a mistake. Even if they thought someone had sent it to them, surely they'd ask the driver if there was a delivery note?? The driver said they accepted it as if it was theirs. It's been 6 weeks since they moved in. I could understand them thinking that on the week of moving but it just doesn't stack up.

They were tw@ts throughout the buying process so I think they knew exactly what they were doing but I'll put it down to experience.

Contact the estate agent and ask them to ring your buyers and say the delivery was in error and you’d like to arrange to collect your stuff? Estate agent should still have a number if a recent move?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 22/02/2020 11:54

We had this loads at uni, you had to stand and wait for the shopping to arrive in your slot or someone else would claim your shopping. The police didn’t really do anything, I think we got some leaflets on theft!

Technically Ocado delivered to where you asked them too; so I think you’d need to go and retrieve the shipping. Or attempt to. It’s a lot more difficult without transport - do you have any friends with a car who could take you round, or is it far enough away that it would be really inconvenient?

Unshriven · 22/02/2020 11:55

It might not have been the people who bought the house who accepted the order.

It could have been relatives, workmen /decorators etc. who thought they were helping out by taking the shopping in.

I'd just write it off.

KahlanRahl · 22/02/2020 12:00

I've accepted plenty of deliveries for the previous, scatterbrained, not-so-nice owner. She just picked them up the same day with an apology.

You write as if they stole from you but they didn't do anything, you made the mistake and they were probably waiting for you to pick it up. You are the one in the wrong here as far as I can tell.

Lunafortheloveogod · 22/02/2020 12:07

Could’ve been a decorator or family member who accepted the order not knowing the new owner hadn’t ordered £100 worth of shopping n obviously wasn’t going to turn away their client/families/friends shopping?

Or they thought you’d fucked up and took it in expecting a knock at the door for it rather than sending it back n leaving you without food for however long it took Ocado to refund the £100 n reorder it again.

You haven’t even called them to ask if they took it/have it or tried to sort a way to get it.

Mammyloveswine · 22/02/2020 12:20

@flutterby63 oh I get that totally but I don't think the police would be interested tbh!

I think as a pp said if you can get the agents to contact them or if possible do you have a friend who could drive round with you to collect?

wibdib · 22/02/2020 12:54

If you left 6 weeks ago and thought that you had changed address, is this the first Ocado order you’ve had since moving or have you had others go to your new address?

If you’ve had others go to your new address then it’s really strange for it to suddenly revert to an old address and I would definitely be chasing that up with Ocado.

Brings to mind trouble I had with a bank changing address - had to go in and do it several times; turned out that as I had been a customer a long time there was an ancient kids account that had been closed or evolved into an adult account that had the previous address on it (so update system used to work) that wasn’t updated properly and kept resetting my account. But because it was such an old account and not held by many people any more it had somehow slipped out of sync and not been tested properly. As moving house wasn’t a common thing the problem wasn’t occurring very often so difficult to track down. It might be that Ocado has some odd legacy systems and did something that has meant it has reverted to your old address automatically.

Have you looked to see what the current address set in there now is?

Can you take a snapshot of it on your phone then another of you deleting the old address so that if this problem ever happens again you can prove Ocado are at fault?

Also if it’s too far from you, do you have any old friends in the neighbourhood that could pop around to pick it up and make use of it? At least then it’s going to friends rather than not!

Flutterby63 · 22/02/2020 13:31

Thanks all. Previous orders went to the correct address, this was an error on my part.

I had a lot of problems with the buyers during the house purchase, even the agent said they were petty and unreasonable. I left a note and some nice wine when they moved in. They had an issue which they asked about rudely (turns it was their fault) and never apologised. I think they were annoyed that issue cost them money.

They didn't pay for a home removal so I'm guessing it was them.

Thanks for replies, will leave it.

Sorry I mean they didn't pay extra for house removal so pretty sure they would be decorating themselves, especially on a Saturday.

We’ve accepted deliveries from someone else before, once my au pair took in an order, unpacked it and it was. My until we got home from holiday a few days later abs found a fridge full of food (the majority of we wouldn’t eat) we realised.

The other time I took it in, didn’t realise it was someone else’s as I didn’t unpack straight away, only realised when my second Ocado order arrived an hour later.

I did call both times, but they won’t take it back in case (I assume) it’s been stored incorrectly or tampered with.
