Director supplying false details to Companies House

Namechangeforlegal · 31/01/2020 11:35

I've name changed for this but am a regular poster.

We have received a notification from Companies House (opened in error on our return from holiday), congratulating person X on their appointment as a company director. X does not live at this address and never has done. (We have lived here for decades).

He has given them our private address as his own.

I have emailed Companies House informing them of this fact, but it has left a sour taste and I am wondering if he may be falsely using our information for other fraudulent purposes.

What should I look out for/ be aware of, please.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Do you know X but don't want him using your address? Because although you say he has never lived at that address you don't say that you have no idea who he is.

Have you looked up the company details. It could be a mistake, I would speak to CH over the phone if possible.

you can check companies house and see what companies this person is involved with.

My first thought would be a typo in the postcode and they've just entered the house number, or it's the same street, different area etc.

So check companies house and see what the business address is, and those of other directors. If they are using multiple unconnected addresses for multiple companies I'd take it further.

The person concerned is not somebody we know or have ever met. He was put in touch with us through a mutual business contact many years ago with a view to maybe doing some business together but it never came to anything. We never spoke to him or met him and the contact was extremely fleeting, but this is where he must have got our address from.

It’s not a mistake at CH I think. The business concerned is in a different part of the country and he does not live round here. I’m sure it’s deliberate on his part.

This is exactly why they send those letters out. You reporting it will raise a red flag.

MissingMySleep · 31/01/2020 18:22

It's now a criminal offence for company directors to intentionally provide incorrect information to Companies House, so he could be in more hot water than he thinks.

MissingMySleep · 31/01/2020 18:23

Also suggest that you do a check through something like clear score which will show up if your name or address is being used for any other purposes

MarieG10 · 01/02/2020 07:33

You can check the company online and the registered company address on the Companies House website. That will tell you if he has changed the address.

Directors can give different addresses for publication as long as genuine...ie an accountants but clearly that doesn't apply. HMRC does though require their own home address

Thank you all for your advice. Yes I agree, he has committed a criminal offence. I will do a check on clearscore and see what Companies House come back with.

Yes I agree, he has committed a criminal offence

Only if it’s intentional. Seems odd to use your address where you know him but not well enough to pass on post to make using that address work.

I wonder if it’s an autofill error? I had a parcel sent to a completely random aquaintance a while ago as for some reason autofill put their address in Blush.

Namechangeforlegal · 01/02/2020 14:04

@Micah we don’t know him. We’ve never met or spoken to him and he was referred to us for some potential business well over ten years ago. There is no way this is an innocent mistake.

Phone companies house. They are easier to deal with on the phone.

That's for the authorities to decide. You've reported it, they will investigate whether it's innocent or not.

Unless, out of all the possible addresses in the UK, CH have miraculously mistyped our address into his records or he has secretly moved into our house, there is no legitimate explanation @Micah.
