Civil Partnership

Hello,
My partner and I have lived together ( his property) for several years. We are not married and we have four children between us. We have both made legal wills which outline who the beneficiaries are and what our wishes are for those beneficiaries. His workplace pension fund has also been factored into the equation. Is a will enough to guarantee my inheritance or do we need to either get married or enter a civil partnership?

Thanks

A will is enough for inheritance but marrying/entering a civil partnership may reduce any inheritance tax bill. It also means the surviving partner may be able to claim bereavement benefits or possibly a retirement pension based on the deceased's NI contributions.

If your relationship comes to an end, marrying or entering a civil partnership will ensure that the assets of the relationship are split fairly. As things stand you may not currently have any claim against his property at all.
