I want some advice about responsibility of debts from being on a social club committee and my resignation.
Would I qualify for 1 hour of legal advice from a solicitor. Or as I have legal aid with my house insurance will they be able to provide me with the information.

Contact your insurer first.

What is the legal position of the social club, are you a CIO or a Trust? Are you a trustee? That's the starting point for working out your liability.

Thanks for replying.
The club is an unincorporated which means it cannot be sued. I have been told that if the club ceases to trade and cannot pay any debts then the committee
have to pay. Unfortunately my health is not very good at the moment and I need to resign. What I want to know is if I resign do my responsibilities also resign.
The trustees are the ACC.

In that case you do have liability. You would only be liable (along with the other members) for debts incurred during your time on the committee.

Does it look likely that the club will fold? How much are the debts you are concerned about? If they're not substantial then creditors may write them off, it can be a lot of hassle to sue individuals in this situation.

You may be able to get free legal advice from

Law Works (solicitors pro bono)

www.lawworks.org.uk/legal-advice-not-profits

Advocate (formally the Bar Pro Bono Unit)

Solicitors offering free legal advice is a marketing tool, and not subject to any central rules about entitlement. Any individual firm can offer you advice for free or not, it's up to them. Your home insurance might cover it, but depends on the policy.
