If I buy a car and it breaks down

I bought a car from a dealership last week and this week it has broken down. Do I have any legal rights or anything? It did come without warranty but can they legally sell me a car that's dodgy?!

It's now not drivable and being taken away to a Mazda garage as the local kwik fit didn't know what to do with it ?engine trouble.

I feel like Mrs Trunchbull after she buys a car from Matilda's dad 🙃

Yes, you do have rights but taking the car somewhere else to be fixed may have compromised your position somewhat.

The car must be fit for purpose (e.g. able to get you from A to B safely), match any description that was given (e.g. if they said it has air conditioning it must have aircon and it must work) and, as you bought it from a dealer, it must be of satisfactory quality given its age and mileage.

As you have had the car less than 30 days you have the right to reject it and get a full refund. You can also ask the dealer to repair or replace it. However, that doesn't mean they have to pay for you to get the car repaired elsewhere. Cancel the garage if they haven't started work on it already and contact the dealer who sold you the car.
