Who are lawyers regulated by? Who can I complain to? Who can I get advice from about another lawyers practice?

The solicitors regulation authority. Google is your friend!

It depends on who you are counting as 'lawyers'. If you mean solicitors then the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

If you mean someone else (lawyers is used as a cover-all term and does not just mean qualified solicitors) then it can be a number of organisations, one of the other common ones being the Council of Licensed Conveyancers.

If you check the firm's letterhead it will tell you on there who they are regulated by and in their terms of business.You would usually be expected to complain to the firm first though to try and resolve the complaint before you go to the SRA etc.

They are regulated by the SRA

You should complain directly first. You can complain to The Legal Ombudsman if you are not satisfied with the response to your complaint.

What has happened, if I may ask?

As others have said, your first action should be to complain directly to the the firm or place where the lawyer works. In most cases, it's a requirement for the firm to have a complaint mechanism

Solicitors = Solictors Regulation Authority

Barristers = Bar Standards Board
