Have I got grounds to persue this?

I signed up a while back for a course that cost me £420. It was a physically exertive course, however due to a medical condition I was unable to actually attend unfortunately.
I contacted the organisation that was putting on the course a week before (as in, the course was due to start 27th and I called them 20th). I spoke to someone who advised me that I could defer on to another course, rather than cancel altogether, for when I'm feeling a bit better.
At the time I thought that would make sense so agreed to that.
Since then it seems that this health issue is not particularly improving and I'm not sure I'll be able to carry out this course at all.
I have contacted the organisation again, but have been told that I am not eligible for a refund as I did not request one more than a week before the course was due to commence.
I'm very upset and angry about this as when I contacted them a week before I would have requested a refund and cancellation but was encouraged to defer and at that point felt I'd be able to attend the course at a later date. Had I been told at that point that agreeing to do so would void my chance of a refund in the future I would not have agreed.
That amount of money is a lot to me and just wondering whether I've got grounds to persue this any further or whether its a waste of my time? Thanks to anyone who can advise x

What were the cancellation terms on booking? Did you get a medical opinion to support the cancellation/deferral?

What do the T&C's say?

It says you can't cancel within 7 days, but I called to cancel a week before and they made out they were doing me a favour my encouraging me to defer rather than cancel.
I didn't get a doctors note at the time but could easily get one as I've had to have my duties at work changed to accommodate this as well.
Surely there should be an exceptional circumstances refund considering I wouldn't physically be able to do it? It's not as if I just cancelled because I couldn't be bothered.
Also, could I just defer to another and then cancel that 8 days before? It just seems a ridiculous rule when I have no choice in the matter and will lose such a lot of money due to no fault of my own!
