Solicitor letter

Hi, I signed an agreement through my ex partners solicitor regarding child care arrangements back in 2014. I now need a copy of this letter and have contacted his solicitor only to be told they no longer have this. Do they legally not have to keep files for a certain amount of time. Or are they refusing because I am not the client; although they will hold data on me. I just want to know if I’m being given the brush off or if they can legally just refuse. Thanks

What do you need it for?

We have to keep our files for 6 years, I would have thought that they would have either a hard copy or it would have been scanned if they destroy hard files.

So was the signed agreement given to the solicitor to hold on behalf of both you and your ex, or could it have been handed over to your ex? The fact that they drafted it doesn't necessarily mean they hold or should hold the signed copy. They may have given it to their client.

They’re supposed to hold client files for six years (that’s the standard limitation period).

We don't have enough information to help with this - you need to answer the questions raised above
