Long story short we found my step son had stolen my debit card, saved the information onto lots of websites & racked up over £4000 worth of purchases. The bank have refused to refund as he is my husbands son it’s a civil matter. Can I dispute this? I wasn’t negligent, I didn’t leave my bank card laying around. I’m at work 12 hours a day so the only time I can think of him being able to get it is when I was sleeping. I’ve had to take a credit card out just to pay my rent & buy food. I can’t afford to loose this money. Im broke.

Please I’m not looking for parenting advise. Myself & my husband have been arguing non stop. I don’t know what to do.

If you do go to the police about this, I don’t know if and how they will be able to recover the monies for/to you? Clearly your SS doesn’t have £4K to reimburse you with, so the debt would surely be passed onto his parents to pay off assuming he is under 18 years old?

No, you are personally liable. It will not pass to your family.

If you contact the companies he's spent money with and mention that he is a vulnerable adult, they might be prepared to refund the money.

I might be tempted to ask for assistance on a legal type website, one where legal people answer your queries such as LegalBeagles.

You could also post on financial websites too, such as MoneySavingExpert as posters on there are likely to be much more savvy with this kind of thing. You may come across someone who has had the same or similar happen to them and can advise.

I am guessing that you will be bounced back from the bank to the companies the purchases were made from as they try and make the other compensate you.

In the meantime, I hope you can return as many goods as possible and get refunds. I also hope your husband is preparing to sell whatever assets he has in order to raise the funds to pay you back.

Good luck
