Job Offer withdrawn after informing employer that I am pregnant.

Hi all,

I originally posted this on as a pregnancy thread. As the situation has evolved I have been advised to post on here. I was offered a job yesterday afternoon and although I know I was under no obligation to inform them, I told the employer that I was expecting in December. Since then I have had the job offer withdrawn as they felt that I “misled them” and wasn’t honest. Is anyone able to give me some advice if I were to take this further.

Well done for following through on this OP. I hope you get the settlement you deserve. Too many companies get away with this.

AmateurSwami · 05/09/2019 20:43

Because I have to give them a number does anyone have any advice or anything similar that I can take a rough idea from? thank you

Not exactly the same, but my
Employer of 3 years ended my
Contract while I was on
Maternity leave. I was offered £600 initially which I declined. I continued to counter until I was offered £4K which I was happy with. I ended up on anti depressants, was devastated.
This particular employer also said they wouldn’t
Promote me as I was pregnant. That wasn’t even part of my complaint through ACAS, but I knew their attitudes to pregnancy from then on!

fluffygreenmonsterhoody · 05/09/2019 20:49

Good luck OP. Thank you for doing this.

Char1997 · 05/09/2019 20:59

@AmateurSwami omg that is awful! I so hope you’re okay now! I know how upset i’ve been over this situation I can’t imagine actually working for them and then being told I would have no chance at promotion and then having my contract ended!

Thank you everyone for all your good luck wishes! will defo keep it updated x

Good luck Op.

EmptyOrchestra · 05/09/2019 21:46

Well done OP. It’s so hard to pursue things like this but it’s how change happens. Good for you.

Maydayredalert · 05/09/2019 21:47

Well done O/P and good luck.

It isn't the same situation but I was fired when I was pregnant 16 years ago. It was never about money, more about the disgusting way I was treated. I took them to a tribunal for sex discrimination and they settled out of court.

AmateurSwami · 05/09/2019 21:48

@Char1997 it was the best thing that could have happened as I’ve ended up in a much better position! Annoyingly they went on to do the same to 2 more pregnant colleagues after, but they didn’t feel strong enough to fight Sad

HermioneWeasley · 05/09/2019 21:54

Hi @Char1997, I’m so glad you’re pursuing this - they are bang out of order and plain stupid.

I’m assume you’ve done your schedule of loss, but remember to include any benefits like pension etc as well.

The tribunal decide the injury to feelings award - but I’d suggest you’re middle band. It’s a one off act, but an extremely serious one.

I’d wish you good luck but you don’t need it - it’s a completely clear cut case so the only question is what to settle for!

BlueRussiann · 05/09/2019 22:45

Good luck OP. Thanks for keeping us updated!

jelly79 · 05/09/2019 23:02

Good luck OP! I hope you receive an apology and a settlement that allows you to receive exactly what you would of earned in the job for at least the first year. Congratulations on your pregnancy too x

soupmaker · 05/09/2019 23:18

Good luck OP. Hope they get the roasting they deserve and you get a decent amount of compensation.

FluffyCloudsInTheSky · 06/09/2019 09:08

Good luck! Sorry the deadline has been pushed back

RhymesWithOrange · 06/09/2019 09:20

OP how big is the company? You don't think they are delaying in order to shut it down/transfer to a phoenix company?

(I am by nature cynical and suspicious).

Twickerhun · 06/09/2019 11:06

Good luck op. I lost a job I had held for 3 years due to pregnancy (even though I struggled to prove it I still got a settlement) thank you for fighting for your rights, it happens too often to be acceptable in this day and age.

BlueBirdGreenFence · 06/09/2019 14:35

Well done OP for continuing with this. I'm sure it isn't easy as your pregnancy progresses.
