Job Offer withdrawn after informing employer that I am pregnant.

Hi all,

I originally posted this on as a pregnancy thread. As the situation has evolved I have been advised to post on here. I was offered a job yesterday afternoon and although I know I was under no obligation to inform them, I told the employer that I was expecting in December. Since then I have had the job offer withdrawn as they felt that I “misled them” and wasn’t honest. Is anyone able to give me some advice if I were to take this further.

I think the really sad thing about this is that it's another woman who has decided to withdraw the job offer.

LatteLove · 31/07/2019 22:41

Why are women expected to have all this loyalty and act “morally” towards a company who, if they dropped dead tomorrow, would replace them in the blink of an eye?

It’s just business.

ohbutyoulovescarves · 02/08/2019 10:47

Any updates OP? Hope you've been able to get some good legal advice

SciFiScream · 02/08/2019 11:08

Employers that don't like pregnant women should never, ever be allowed to employ anyone who has spent time in a womb....

Char1997 · 02/08/2019 20:05

@ohbutyoulovescarves hey, just waiting for pregnant and screwed to ring back as they’re really busy but spoke to a friend who is an employment lawyer and they said I should definitely take it further! I’ll keep you all updated though.

YouKnowOneDayAtATime · 07/08/2019 12:01

Following with interest! Has the company been back in touch with you?

lucy2311 · 08/08/2019 00:32

That can't be legal surely?!

Mummytoonlychild · 08/08/2019 20:24

Any update @Char1997

Char1997 · 09/08/2019 00:15

Hi all,

I have now logged an early conciliation with acas as advised by pregnant then screwed. So hopefully this can be sorted through that. If anything i’m doing this for the reason that I was withdrawn a job because I am pregnant and probably the many other women who have felt this way! It’s not fair for us to feel worried and frightened to tell an employer that you’re expecting a baby in case they withdraw a job offer or fail a probation or even just make your life hell! I will keep this updated if I get any news.

Thank you everyone who suggested Pregnant then screwed and all those who offered advice and well wishes! I appreciate it x

What do you want the outcome to be ? Do you still want to work there ?

billybagpuss · 09/08/2019 07:11

Well done @Char1997 what are the likely outcomes? I’m guessing the company have already changed their internal rules as to who is allowed to talk to new recruits.

@AnchorDownDeepBreath I’ve had one of those not knowing what day it is weeks I genuinely thought it was Wednesday when I posted and now it feels like Thursday 🤷🏼‍♀️School holidays confuse me.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 09/08/2019 11:16

Really proud of you OP. Well done. Thank you for doing this.

JaniceBattersby · 09/08/2019 23:40

Good for you Char. The women’s rights movement is the sum of all these little parts that women play in fighting to ensure their rights afforded to them by law are upheld. Good luck, and please do let us know how it goes.

ncweds · 09/08/2019 23:55

Bloody brilliant well done!

MidsomerBurgers · 11/08/2019 12:50

Well done OP.

ShirleyPhallus · 15/08/2019 09:27

Really glad to read your update OP, please keep us informed!

Char1997 · 15/08/2019 17:07

Hey all,
Heard back from ACAS today and they want figures from me in terms of how much I would be willing to settle for. This question itself has made me feel so awkward hahaha because i am not that type of person! I’m classing myself in the lower compensation band which i Researched to be from £900 to £8800. Because I have to give them a number does anyone have any advice or anything similar that I can take a rough idea from? thank you x
