Random thread, but what’s everyone’s opinion on ‘sueing the nhs’. Had a large debate in work today with a 50/50 argument and I’m interested to see people’s opinions

Entirely depends on why.

If it's for a birth that was mismanaged leading to huge costs of care, yes. Or a misdiagnosis with bad prognosis because of the delay, yes.

So anything in those kind of categories I'd say yes.

Most other things, no. Certainly not frivolous or selfish reasons.

notapizzaeater · 22/07/2019 19:29

I agree, if it's something huge then yes but for something silly then no.

If it's a huge mistake with lifelong implications then yes maybe. But a certain level of human error should be expected and this culture of suing is holding medical professionals back in some ways.

We sued the nhs - I never thought I would but negligence left my son with a lifelong disability & limited life. I think its quite right to call people out when they have made serious errors. My regret is that the individuals didn't appear to have any consequences for their errors which is entirely wrong. I wanted them sacked or to be punished. They were negligent & should have paid for it. I know this sounds like I'm after revenge... which I am. I'm still pretty angry about it & it was over 10 years ago.

@Chocolate50 you should be able to sue the individual in my opinion and not the whole NHS! each health care professional should have their own ensure before they can work in that field. Then at least you feel they are being held accountable for what happened. Sorry to hear about your son x

@Chocolate50 insurance, not ensure

It could take years and if I was you I would only do it if they have caused serious injury.

@Geneva1995

Do you work? If so, please explain what insurance you have personally taken out to cover you in the event that you make a mistake and cause someone financial loss.

Or do you just think that it's only health care professionals who should be denied the cover afforded by their employer's insurance policy?

Medical indemnity insurance is very expensive. Should we expect doctors and nurses to pay for it out of what we pay them currently? Or do we give them a pay increase to cover the cost?

And do you think it would be cheaper for them to trot off to GoCompare to each get their own individual policy, or do you now realise how idiotic that sounds, and it's far cheaper for a health authority to bulk purchase insurance for all employees?

I can't understand some of the people who start threads on this site sometimes. Geez.
