Curtains, Rather boring where do I stand legally?

I bought a pair of curtains (supposedly blackout curtains) they needed shortening to fit our windows so I took them straight to be altered, I have got them back and put them up. 1 is obviously a blackout curtain and the other isn't. The backing looks and feels the same.

Where do I stand legally with regards to a refund or exchange?

Look at the consumer rights act 2015 Chapter 2, s10 which lays out your rights. They are not fit for the particular purpose for which they were purchased. The alterations are irrelevant. Take photos of them when up, showing the light coming through, for evidence.

And s19 ss9 and 10, which lays out your right to compensation over and above the cost of the item purchased. So you can recover the costs of the alterations from the retailer from which they were purchased. Hope that helps.

@Jon65 thank you, it was the alterations that had me worried, I knew that I had the right to a refund/exchange if they were returned under normal circumstances but I wasn't sure how relevant the alterations were.

I will take photos and return them for a refund because they were the only ones of the colour that I wanted.
