Doubt it? Why are you worried if he can?x

prh47bridge · 21/05/2019 13:38

As far as I am aware this type of hub doesn't keep a log so no, he can't find out in that way.

Sparklfairy · 21/05/2019 13:40

Presumably though ads will come up on his browser based on stuff you've looked at because of cookies etc? I once found out my ex was planning a surprise trip away for us because I kept seeing ads for the hotel after he'd been on their website Shock

Collaborate · 21/05/2019 13:52

@Sparklfairy That is all down to cookies on the browser, so it won't show on another's device.

We also get ads from what someone else in the house has been looking at. Our son is staying with us while he has a house built and I've been seeing a lot of ads for house products he has been looking at on his laptop. Last summer I was getting lots of men's underwear ads when my BIL was staying here. I told my husband and he said his newly widowed brother had mentioned he was thinking of trying a different style of underwear - instead of white Y fronts he'd worn for 70 years.

I was seeing ads for cock hammocks lol.

Use “private” or “incognito” browsing. You will have to remember passwords, but it does a better job of masking your trail.

kbPOW · 22/05/2019 00:54

Yes - if you are in a network he will be able to see which websites you have used.

PerspicaciaTick · 22/05/2019 01:16

Quite possibly. Items DH has been looking at (eBay, flights etc.) on the desktop PC often appear on my FB and, yesterday, my MN ads. He doesn't use FB or MN.

SpoonBlender · 22/05/2019 01:26

I do this for a living.

  1. You people need to install adblockers. 1blocker for Apple iThings, uBlock Origin for Windows browsers, no idea about Android. These don't just block ads, they also hinder the ad-generators from being able to track you. Win win.

  2. No, other people cannot tell what you're browsing from your phone over the wifi on a Virgin hub. It has no facility to reveal that. Your device talks direct to the hub, which goes out to the Internet for you. There's no way to intercept that inside the house.

  3. If you're worried about this sort of thing and need to browse in full privacy, you should be using the TOR browser - download it for your device/computer and go wild. It's dedicated to hiding who you are and where you're browsing from and to.

safariboot · 22/05/2019 01:44

Only if he's set up special devices or programs to spy on you. The Virgin Media hub doesn't do it by itself.

prh47bridge · 22/05/2019 07:39

If you and someone else use the same device and the same account you will get ads based on what the other person has looked at. If you both log in to Google using the same account you will also get this. However, if you are both using different devices and different accounts (as is the OP's situation) you will not be affected.

Some routers keep logs that allow you to see who has been looking at what. Most don't. The Virgin hub doesn't have such a log so the OP's husband can't use it to find out what the OP has been looking at.

random79 · 22/05/2019 08:20

If your husband is technically capable he could see what you were looking at over the internet. He would probably have to have an additional always on machine or access to a server on the internet.

If he doesn't work in IT odds are he wouldn't know how to do it as it's a bit complex, but for those who feel it's impossible, here are some ways to approach it.

Easy way, run a local DNS server, and then log results. Won't tell you the page accessed, but would give you a fairly good idea of the top level website. Not familiar with the specific hardware, but most will allow you to set custom DNS as part of the DHCP configuration.

Harder route is to basically install something like mitmproxy and install a custom root certificate on the devices you're using. That's detectable if you know what you're looking for.

Mumtoboy123 · 22/05/2019 08:23

I sniff a reverse and you want to see what your DH has been browsing on his device using your wifi?!

PerryMasonsFriend · 23/05/2019 15:00

Not directly related to the hub question, but if you have ever used his computer and logged into your google account if you have one, sometimes your activity will show in the google account on other computers if your still logged in elsewhere.

BringMeAGinandTonic · 23/05/2019 16:49

@spoonblender Is this not possible using Wireshark?

ThePants999 · 23/05/2019 19:10

No. Wireshark can only capture traffic that reaches the device it's running on. Despite Virgin calling it the Super Hub, it's not actually a hub, it's a router. Traffic is not broadcast to everything connected to it, it's sent to the correct device. If one computer connected to it sends traffic to/from the Internet, other computers connected to it will see nothing.

SpoonBlender · 23/05/2019 19:20

^^ What Pants said. Even if Wireshark was running and recording on the local device it will only see encrypted scruff anyway, it can see you're conversing with www.google.com but not what about in either direction.

filka · 02/06/2019 13:12

Just disconnect from the wifi on your phone and use mobile data.

Foxmuffin · 02/06/2019 13:14

I don’t know, but I’m intrigued as to what you’ve been looking at?
