to report my ex for damaged goods?

I recently left my ex partner because he was abusive. It was an amicable split but turned nasty when I stopped pandering to his demands.

He has had a clear out and destroyed all my things. My neighbour has confirmed this and his young children told me (I visited them with my son) that he put all my clothes and things in the bin.

Would I get anywhere reporting this to the police? If it's all my clothes and all the things left in the house, it's hundreds, if not thousands of pounds worth of stuff. He changed the locks on the house out of spite so I couldn't even get back there to get the rest of my things.

Are the police going to tell me to sod off as I have no real evidence? Do I let this go?

Very upset.

I would get this moved to Legal OP.
The advice on there is usually very good.

@endofthelinefinally I've reported myself and asked for it to be moved. Thank you

Not much help but i would say go to your local station and ask but it is possible you may get further with a small claims court?

endofthelinefinally · 03/05/2019 19:15

Is it his property?
Just wondering if he was legally allowed to change the locks.
Agree that it might be worth looking at the small claims website.

The police won't get involved. This is a civil matter, not a criminal one. However, if he has destroyed your property you may be able to claim compensation from him based on the value of the property involved.

Just wondering if he was legally allowed to change the locks

The OP hasn't told us who owned the house. If it is his he is entitled to change the locks.

anxietyanxiety · 04/05/2019 18:50

I still own 50% of the house.

Then no as far as I'm aware he cant lock you out

Pearpickinpenguin · 04/05/2019 19:03

If you own half the house then the illegal part on his behalf was changing the locks. He cannot legally do this. Definitely go to the police about this.

prh47bridge · 04/05/2019 19:10

No, he cannot change the locks but it is still not a criminal matter. The police won't get involved.
