Will a solicitor advise you how make your Will?

If you go to a solicitor to make a Will, will they be able to give you and advice on how to leave your money?

Nothing complicated, just children and grandchildren and how it is best to split it. So 50/50 to children or is it better to leave some to grandchildren as well. If you’ve helped one of the children in your lifetime, should you leave less to them on your death. That kind of thing.

Or will they only write it for you and advise you on legal implications of what you say, for example that you need a clause about what happens if beneficiaries pre-decease you?

I wondered if they might be forbidden from influencing how you leave your money, but I’m not sure if that’s a thing or not!

Mumblechum mnetter Of Marlowe wills is excellent and gives good advice.

When I did my will they asked lots of questions and what I wanted to do then discussed other options.

So they won't tell you what to do but in my experience they will provide options you may not have thought about and why you might want to do it one way over another.

Second Mumblechum, she gives great advice! And is very reasonably priced, not cheap, cheap but very thorough.

Thanks so much, Sandwich, Ramblin and Random, that’s very kind!
OP, I offer as much or as little guidance as my clients need.

Sometimes people have absolutely no clue what they want to do with their estate, so I take a while to find out the family dynamics and history, and will make suggestions of ways to ensure that the client is 100% happy with what they eventually decide.

Other people know exactly what they want, and so long as I don’t foresee any problems (eg cutting out a dependent child), I simply put those instructions into the Will.
