New job. Will be self employed. What do I need to know.

I will be starting a new job tomorrow looking after animals. My previous job was exactly the same role but i was employed. I have been trying to google what being self employed means for tax, do i need insurance, etc, purposes. But only info I'm finding is about starting my own business. But I will be working for someone elses' business so the info doesn't seem relevant to me.
Can anyone tell me what I need to know to make sure I don't break the law and/or run up a big tax bill?

There are very strict criteria that you can be designated as self employed. Can you choose your own hours for example, take on other work. Or is your employer paying you what amounts to a salary? They may be acting illegally by claiming you're self employed and avoiding given you employment rights.

Agree with PP, and it's worth getting professional advice on. I am "self-employed" at the moment, but actually I'm going to have to be careful as I'm currently working full-time at one place of work, they supply all my materials & equipment and dictate what pieces of work I do. That type of "contracting" is very common in my industry.
However, it is not "self-employed" like perhaps a joiner / plumber / cleaner with their own business is.

At the very least, you'll have to do self-assessment tax return (as you presumably aren't PAYE if you're calling yourself self-employed). May be worth chatting to an accountant / book-keeper if you are now running your own company?

I’d give the HMRC a call.
