Reporting a car accident to insurers

My colleague's car was hit by a reversing delivery van a month ago. There's CCTV of the reversing but no conclusive evidence of contact. He hasn't reported it to his insurers as he's been waiting for the company to get back to him but they're dragging their feet. He can't prove the bump wasn't there when he parked in the space that morning and is worried the company will say 'prove it wasn't there before our van reversed'. He's concerned he hadn't reported it to his insurer and had been hoping to sort it directly with no report needed but is worried about invalidating his insurance if he doesn't report. Conversely he's worried about his insurance going up if a report is made as it's a prestige car with pretty high insurance as it is. Damage is a bumper scuff and broken headlight no panel damage.

When he renews his insurance next year he will be asked have you been involved in any accidents in the last x years (regardless of fault or whether he claimed).

you have to tell them whether you claim or not so its best to just claim. yes, premium will go up a bit but he can shop around for a better deal.

Thank you. As I suspected.

He may have a problem if there is a clause in the policy regarding time to report.

Some policies will raise the excess if you don't report within 24 hours.
