Would I need extra insurance for this?

I’m starting to run some cake decorating classes, some from home and some in the students’ homes. Just wondering if I would need some extra insurance or if home insurance would cover anything that could happen. It’s quite low risk really but always a risk of tripping and falling, allergic reactions, cutting yourself.
Also anything else I need to do to cover myself other than register as self employed (kitchen is already registered with a hygiene rating of 5/5).
I would ring up insurance and ask but skeptical that they would try and sell me insurance I don’t really need. I’m only going to be earning about £100 a month of that, so obviously don’t want to spend a quarter of that on public liability insurance! But of course I will if I need to, I need this to be non-stressful so want to be covered.

You absolutely do. Your normal home insurance won’t concede using your home as an active place of business that the public pay to attend. You also need to check that your mortgage company/landlord are okay with you running this sort of business from home.

*cover using your home

Ok thanks! So public liability insurance?

Yes. And make sure any of your personal items are covered and secured too.

You should also check that there's not a covenant contained within the deeds disallowing running a business from the house.

Ok thanks! This probably isn’t worth it then but i’ll look into all these things, thanks.

You need public liability if they come into your home and possibly business insurance, you also need hygiene certificates from the council and possibly a licence. Your car must be insured for business
