Employer wants to reduce period of notice in case of redundancies

My employer is going through a period of redundancies. Those of us not affected have been asked to change the terms of our contract of employment such that they are able to give us 3 months' notice rather than the current 6 months if we are to face redundancy at a later date.

We have been asked individually if we would agree to the change. It is clearly beneficial to the employer, but detrimental to me. Am I obligated to agree?

Would it change how much notice you’re required to give if you leave?

Nothavingfunrightnow · 04/03/2019 14:25

No. The letter requesting the changes relate only to the redundancy period. The letter also says that this would put the employer in line with the rest of comparable industry.

If you don't agree they'll just give you six months notice on your current contract and issue a new one with the three months that they want.

I thought that refusing would be pointless. Thanks, Singlenotsingle.

Speak to ACAS

I'll do so. Thanks, BritinUs1

If you don't agree they'll just give you six months notice on your current contract and issue a new one with the three months that they want.

Which could lead to a minefield of constructive dismissal and discrimination claims - especially as : We have been asked individually if we would agree to the change.

Definitely one to get outside help on. Do you have legal cover on your home insurance ?

Nothavingfunrightnow · 08/03/2019 06:27

I rent so I don't have home cover. I'll go to the CAB or Acas as suggested above. Thank you, everyone.
