My just turned 18 year old ds has received a letter to say he needs to attend court as a witness. He witnessed his friend killed in an accident last year. How much support ( if any )will he receive ? Will either me or dh be allowed to go to court with him to support him ? I'm worried sick about the whole process and the effect it will have on him. He seems to have coped remarkably well so far with coming to terms with what happened, he has declined a private counsellor that we found for him. I'm worried this is going to trigger the release of a lot of heartbreak ( for want of a better word) he is holding in. if anyone has experienced this with their child I'd really like to know how it went. Will they just treat him as an adult now that he has just turned 18 ?

Is it a criminal prosecution, or a claim for damages?

Babyroobs · 31/01/2019 20:41

The driver is being charged with death by dangerous driving.

Witness Support are very helpful. Contact the court where the trial will be held and get their advise.

Yep, witness support. They can do court visits and everything.

And yes, you can go along with him.

From my experience, the worst part is sitting waiting to be called and perhaps having to go back again the next day. You can certainly go and sit with in the waiting room. Time plenty to read.
