Been married 10 years, husband purchased house 4 years ago. I am not on house deeds. What happens if we divorce? Does it cost a lot to be put on deeds?

Is it the family home? The house would be considered a family asset so it doesn't matter that it's in his sole name.

You can register a Matrimonial Home Rights restriction to protect your interest in the even of separation or divorce. That would prevent him from selling from under you whilst the finances are being sorted.

If it's an investment property, it would still be considered a family asset by the sounds of it, but you would need to protect by way of a different sort of restriction.

You would need a conveyancer to add you to the title, and your husband would need to consent and co-operate. It's worth thinking about doing that for inheritance purposes, but take proper advice on all the options.

It's a family home as we have 3 children. Thanks for advice

Everything owned or owed, including pensions is added up. You start at 50/50 and go from there.

If the house is mortgaged, not all mortgage companies will permit someone not on the mortgage to be on the deeds so it would be worth checking that aspect as well.

The house is mortgage free but worried as I have paid no money into our house as I don't work but stayed at home to care for children.

If you divorce the house will go into the pot to be split between you. The fact you are not on the deeds will make absolutely no difference.
