Noisy neighbours

The man downstairs has complained about noise coming from our apartment. Specifically TV noise and footsteps. None of us wear shoes inside and we don't run or deliberately stomp around. DD is crawling and likes to make a noise with baby toys - as kids do. We have turned the TV to the lowest setting possible (I wasn't aware it was that loud in the first place but I don't want to argue).
He has his bedroom in what is typically the living room in these apartments, so it's directly below our living room. DD is a very early riser.
My anxiety is at all time high now because of this and Im on edge about any noise I'm making but it's just general living we aren't noisy people! Any advice?

What flooring do you have down?

mummmy2017 · 13/01/2019 10:49

Can you put a rug down, to help dull the sounds.

We just bought the place a year ago and moved in really quickly. We have decent-ish carpets and underlay under them all.

The man downstairs is possibly one of those who thinks if he can hear anything from the neighbouring property, he has cause for complaint. Some people believe that they have a right to silence. They don’t. If you live in close proximity with others you can expect a certain amount of noise. You say you’re considerate and try to keep the noise down and still he complains. Let him...you can’t be expected to creep around in your own home. You’re not doing anything wrong.

I would ignore him; we had neighbours who complained about footsteps and considering no one wore shoes in the flat and we went to bed at 10.30 it wasn’t like they were being disturbed all night.
It sounds like it’s only an issue because he’s put his bedroom where a lounge would be as normally tv noise wouldn’t bother you if you’re in your lounge; in most flats I’ve lived in you can hear someone’s tv faintly when you’re in the lounge but seeing as I’d either have my tv on or music I didn’t care.
In flats people have to accept a level of noise.

In that case I agree with pictish

Just politely tell him to lodge a complaint with landlord/environmental health.
Let him go through the process of being told it’s not nuisance noise and the complaint won’t be upheld. It’s no skin off yours...if he wants the hassle, he can bash on.

I had a neighbour like this once btw. Same scenario. That’s what I did...invited him to make official his complaint and waste their time instead of bothering me.

Thanks Pictish! This has made me feel a lot better. I hate conflict but I did feel he was being rather unreasonable. Thank you.
