have I been given a caution?

Need some advice from people who know about the police system (at least better than I do). Last year I was involved in an incident which I am very ashamed of - I was drunk and got into an argument with a boy I had never met before and things turned a bit violent. The police were ultimately called. I can't remember it but I was told that I hit him with a beer bottle. My friend later told me I did this because he grabbed me from behind. As I say, I myself can't remember though. I remember speaking with the police though it is a bit vague. I am worried that they gave me a caution and I can't remember it. They didn't take me to the station or into their car. I know that they did take my details and I am also worried that this means I have a criminal record. I am very ashamed by what happened and if I could go back and change it I would. I know I can apply online for a DBS check but to be honest I'm too scared to in case it does show up. I am also worried this will show up when applying for jobs and placements etc. Thank you in advance for your advice.

Unfortunately it sounds as though you didn’t receive a caution, you could always ask them?

is there a way I can ask without having to apply for a DBS check?

If you go into the police station they should be able to tell you- take ID with you

You can apply for an access request to see what is held about you on the police national computer . Google will tell you how to do it :)

They didn't give you a caution. they would have arrested you first.

As far as I know you would have had to agree to a formal caution and sign a document. This would have happened at the station so I wouldn’t worry about it.

You wouldn't have had to be arrested but they would have had to formally interview you. To caution you, a more senior officer would then attend and ask you to sign paperwork.

You don't have a caution.

If you were so drunk that you cannot remember what has happened, then the police would not have been able to deal with you there and then. If they took your details it is more likely that they will be retained in case the male you allegedly hit makes a complaint against you.

You were not arrested. There is no charge. A caution is something you would have had to agree to. You're free. You have no criminal record.

A caution is an official thing, you'd have to be interviewed and recorded, sign etc and have to be able to do so.
